I have often wondered when rolling my spare change in coin wrappers whether I was giving away coins that are worth more than their face value in collector’s markets. Additionally, I’ve recently been researching metal-detecting & treasure hunting on beaches and other areas. When I find coins, which ones are worth more than their face-value and which are not? With this in mind, I’ve created a checklist for myself to help flag coins that might be valuable in some way. Of course, the value of coins varies according to what is in demand in collector’s markets. So the checklist is already out of date. That said, if you don’t know much about the coin collector’s market and how to spot a valuable coin when you see one, this checklist is a good start. The checklist should be helpful to those who manually deal with coins on a regular basis, such as coin-operated machine owners, metal-detectorists, and coin-shooters. Keep in mind that this checklist is not a replacement for a good coin guide (recommendations?) and a good knowledge of coins.
I hope you find the checklist useful. Please share in the comments below if it has brought you any success in identifying valuable coins.

I have a 1888 and 1850 1 cent coin, a 1902 25 cent coin and 2 1953 nickels. All the coins are Canadian and I am interested to know if they have any value. Thanks
dear Claude 1888 canada penny is roughly $5.00 in roughest condition, as for 1850 might be from US, 1858 is earliest Canada 1 cent. 1902 25 C, basically for silver, maybe 50C at most, and it depends on condition. both 1953 5C, again depnds on condition and what type they are, one with and without should fold are for all 1953/54/55 nickels.
I’m glad I can help
Hello
I have a canadian one cent coin as well. The coin clearly says 1850 and also says Canada. Any ideas?
Thanks
i have a 1959 one cent and i also would like to know the value
Comment on coins checklist:
5 C Canada’s 100th is 1967(rabbit nickel) tougher to find than rest.
10 C Nothing special about 1970 dime, I got a about 40 of them, seems fine to me.
25C 1973 Large bust is very rare, but findable. Good luck to anyone who finds one.
1991 I got 26 of them found them over the past 5 years going thru rolls of 25C.
Dollar section, Peace keeping coin either came out in 1994 or 1995, 1997-1999 are for sets only but I have found 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 in a few rolls of dollars a few years ago. I’m still search for 1997″Flying loon”. I got a 1987 dollar that’s almost uncirculated.
as for the higher valued coins, good luck thru circulation, most only come in sets(specimen/poof, or higher)
Hi there
I have the 1c, 5c, 10c, 25c 100th 1967 coins. The 25c piece has a cougar on it, I tried a magnet on it but it won’t pick it up. Does that mean anything…I’m very new to this…
Thanks
Janet
HI i have a canadian nickel but it has no date on it is this a misprint any help would be nice thank you
No date?! Seriously?! Try checking the other side if you haven’t already, if there’s no date there either, it is indeed a misprint and really valuable.
Not a misprint. If it is the one I’m thinking of the date is on the back and it is from 2002.
Cliff I have 3 of these coins.
Kelli is correct.
Get a magnifying glass.
You will see the tiny date below the

I have a 1912 $5.00 gold coin – Canadian Mint condition
What would the value be?
Hi, Everyone!
There are many issues involved with pricing coins (like any collectible item), that simply stating year and perceived condition is not enough information. What may seem like Mint condition may not be Mint condition at all to a professional numismatist or grading company. What I would recommend is getting yourself a copy of a book like Canadian Coins – Vol. One: Numismatic Issues 2010, 64th Ed. (Charlton’s Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins)
. If you’re fortunate, your public library will subscribe to Charlton’s Standard Catalogue
series of books on identifying and pricing collectible items.
Have a great day!
Yours truly,
M.E.B.
P.S. — If you like coins, you may enjoy my lucky found money blog.
HI, i have a gold canadian mint coin that has no date on it, it has a picture of the ottawa mint on one side and winnipeg mint on the other, i was wondering if u could give me some info on it, i can find anything about it online!!
thanks!
Daryl
Hi, Daryl!
I’m not familiar with that coin and don’t have a reference handy. If you have access to a public library, they might have a book like Canadian Coins, 62nd Edition – A Charlton Standard Catalogue (Charlton’s Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins)
that you can check out.
If anyone has information that might be useful for Daryl, please share!
Have a great day!
M.E.B.
Hi Daryl
The coin you have is a medalion that can be purchased at the mint. I have one from back in the early eighies and one purchased last month at the Ottawa mint. The one purchased last month was bought for $7.95.
Hope this helps.
Why is the canadian – 1968 ten cent coin more than face value ? Is there something extraordinary about it i.e. interesting history/background ?
Linda J
I am not sure why the 1968 would be worth more than the 1967 coin, or if in fact that is true, but I do know late 1967 and 1968 was when they stopped minting using a silver/copper mix in favour of the cheaper nickel versions which we still use today.
there are actually 3 1968 Canadian dimes. 1 is from the Ottawa mint i nickel, the 2nd is from the Ottawa mint in .500 silver and the 3rd is from the Philly mint. The Philly mint is less common and worth more and the silver issue is also worth more that could be why you are finding higher values.
I have a 1936 canada one cent with a redish color, both sides face up i dont know if that was common them days or not. thank you
No, that is really rare and, depending on the condition, can be REALLY valuable. Like, $150 000 valuable, if that website I found was right. If I was you, I wouldn’t sell that coin for anything less than $100 000.
Actually, the only 1936 coin that is worth anything will have a dot in between the 19 and the 36, and it’s base value is around 110,000$ … one recently sold a little over a year ago at auction for over 350,000$, as one has not been seen in a VERY long time… over 650,000 were minted this way, but most were melted down during the war, so there aren’t many left around.
anyone know what a 1948 dollar in perfect shape is worth
Hi John,
A 1948 dollar in MS-65 condition is worth approximately $15 000. This is not quite ‘perfect’, but it’s about as close to perfection as anyone is going to get.
Thanks for the question.

I found this site that claims to have sold a 48 dollar for $57,500. Maybe biding frenzy. How would I go about selling my dollar? I live in Winnipeg, not many graders or buyers here. My coin is absolutly perfect, with only slight tarnish because I am afraid to clean it. My Dad got the coin from his brother in the 50s. So it did not see much, if any, circulation.
hi i have a 1867 coin thats in perfect condition its just a little dirty does anybody know how much it is worth or how much i could get for it bcz my grandpa got it from his dad or grandpa and he gave it to me and i have had it for about 5 or 6 years but i never got around to actually seen how much its worth
I am looking for a 1994 Canadian Penny and am wondering why this is a rare coin. I was hoping that you could shed some light on that for me and tell me if I should really make the leap and spend up to $1.00 on this coin. I am not a collector I just wanted to have one to give my son as it is his birth year.
If you’re simply looking for a 1994 Canadian penny in any condition, this should not be difficult to find at all. Maybe try asking for a few rolls of pennies at your local bank.
Hi Renee,
I checked my pennies and found one,it looks like any other penny you’d find in your loose change so it’s definitely not in collector condition. But if you’re still not having any luck and still want it let me know. I’ll check back here in a couple of weeks for your reply.
Thanks,
Phoenix

Hi Beth,
I actually have a 1936 dot penny.. and let me tell you, nobody will acknowledge that there were around 650k minted. I went through a lot of trouble verifying it’s authenticity… electron microscopy test. PCGS, stated that it wasn’t a fake but couldn’t verify it as authentic. I have this expensive penny sitting here not doing anything. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
Thanks

i found a nicke from 1867-1967 with a rabbit on it how much is it worth?
and a quarter with a bob cat or something on it from same years??
Krystal,
In MS-60 (typical uncirculated condition) the 1967 knickel is worth about $0.35 according to the ‘Trends’ section of Canadian Coin News. Typical uncirculated means that the coin has no wear; however, it can have bag marks (ie. scratch marks) detectable by the naked eye.
A 1967 quarter is still only worth bullion value. This means that the coin is only worth its weight in silver. Depending on the price of silver, this would probably be no more than a few dollars.
hey! all of the canadian 1867-1967 coins are collecter items. depending on how much you want for it you can get a few bucks out of the quarter. im not sure about the nickel but these coins are getting harder and harder to find. the most i’ve seen for the quarter is $15. hope this helps
i also have 3 u.s.a coins
2 are big silve round one dollers from year1776-1976
and a half doller someone tell me how much they are
not packaged though
Hi
I have Prince Edward Island one cent from 1871 in great condition.
Could you give me some info on it? My grandmother left me a coin collection.
Hi Tracy, The one cent from prince Edward island is quite interesting for the fact that it’s the only official currency (non-token money) they have ever gotten. There was a total of 2 million made but no doubt a smaller amount is left today. For the price of this coin, by great condition I’m assuming you mean most of the details are left on the queen Victoria. If so this coin could be worth from 90 to 125 dollars. if the queen is reduced to a silhouette and no detail can be seen it is only worth 3 dollars. The condition of the queens hair, crown, eye brow, ear, nose and mouth play a big role in pricing the coin. But on the other hand if the coin is still red almost like today’s circulated pennies and has perfect detail on the queen it could be worth around 900 dollars.
I hope this helped! have a great day
i HAVE A 1998 CANADIAN DIME. THE 1 IN THE DATE 1998 IS UPSIDE DOWN, CLEARLY A MIS PRINT I HAVE SEEN NO MENTION OF THIS MISTAKE, COULD THISBE REALLY RARE?
Considering that the 1 in Canadian dimes is a single bar and could not be upside down I would suggest that what you have is a die crack, it could be worth something as an error but only a picture would make identification possible.
I would be interested in this – if you had this graded by ICCS.
A reputable coin dealer in Winnipeg should do this for you for less than $20.00-it may take a month.
I would like to see a picture of this – you can email it to gholden@shaw.ca
Please also leave your contact info for me.
I have a complete set of 1948 coins – including 1- 1.00 ,2 -.50 cent, 4 .25 cent – 2-.05 cent 2-.10 and 2 .01…and I am always looking to add to my collection.
All my coins have been graded by ICCS – otherwise I will not buy – the only exception would be a grading by JandM coin of Vancouver.
Thanks
G Holden: gholden@shaw.ca
Hi, Everyone,
For those who don’t know, ICCS stands for the International Coin Certification Service, a Canadian third-party coin grading service located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They specialize in grading Canadian coins. They do not provide coin valuations.
Have a great day!

I have a Canadian penny seperated in two and a 1962 Canadian quarter is there any value ?
i have a few cions like a 1922 penny,1927 nickle,1944 nickle,1751 to1951 nickle, and a 1949 quarter so do i keep them are the worth something the all are in mint condition.and a united states mint uncirculated penny wiyh no date from philadelphia
I received a 1940 Canadian penny George iv in my change, could it be worth anything?
Hello Bill, an average 1940 Canadian penny found in your change would be worth from 2 to 4 dollars. Then again you can still put the thought of this penny being around in war time making it pretty cool in history value.
Best wishes.
I have an old Canadian Coin dated 1891 the has the name John J.C. Abbott on one side and the parliament buildings on the other. I also have two beautiful $1 coins dated July 1969 with Klondike days and Good for $1 in edmonton on them.
The other side has Edmonton Canada and Klondike Dollar on it. Wondering if they have any worth or are they just tokens?
Curious if either is worth anything.
M
Hi Mark
Coincidentally, we just found that same John J C Abbott ‘coin’ in a heat vent in our 1930 built house that we’re renovating. I’ve just spent about an hour online researching it thinking it might be valuable. Unfortunately I don’t think it is. It’s actually not a coin, but a medallion. It was part of a set that Shell gas stations put out in 1971 to commemorate Prime Ministers from the 1860′s until the 1960′s. If one were to possess the whole set, it might be worth a little bit of money, but i somehow doubt that one on its own would be worth much. I still haven’t found out the definitive answer to that question, though, so i hope i’m wrong!
All the best,
Patricia
I have a 1969 s penny is it worth something
Orlando, this might not be the answer you were hoping for but a 1969 s penny is worth about roughly 35 cents but on the other side, it’s interesting to know that in 1969 the dies used were modified to strengthen the design and the size of Lincoln’s head was slightly reduced in size on that design.
Best regards.
heyy, i found a 1956 canadian penny, i was thinking that since its very old is it worth anything?
Tyler, the 1956 Canadian penny doesn’t really have anything special, it’s base value is about 3 dollars but even that’s in a almost Uncirculated condition. A heavily circulated 1956 penny would probably sit around 80 cents or a dollar depending if someone wants it.
On another point of view, this could be a start of a collection if you have any interest in this.
have a great day!
I have a 1940 Canadian Quarter that was obviuosly double struck in the date. The 9, 4 and 0 all show some part of the number underneath them. Any ideas on how many are known to have this?
Well Mike, according to any trends or issue’s of Charlton the 1940 quarter has no double struck variety. If the part of numbers lest under the date looks authentic maybe you should have ICCS or any professional grader look at it for more information. You never know you could have found the first of a new variety
.
Max, that;s what my collector friend has said. Then he offered me 30x face for it (as a joke!). We are sending it out next week with some of his coins to be graded and authenticated. Thanks for your reply. I’ll let everyone know what we find out!
As a collector myself, I’m very glad to know that the coin is going to be looked at! Hahaha thats a good one 30x face
. Well, thank you for replying back and really big thanks for letting us know the results !! If you ever need another opinion or help on something, it would be my pleasure to help as much as i can.
Best regards.
Would you care to see a picture of it? Give me an email address, and I can send you one. Taken with my little Kodak, but zoomed in you can really see the defect (?).
Pictures would be great! my email is max_leblanc7777@hotmail.com. thank you so much
!!
I HAVE THREE DIFFERENT CANADIAN COINS THE FIRST IS A 1903 1CENT, THE SECOND IS 1919 1CENT AND THE THREE IS 1968 10CENT. CAN YOU TELL ME IF ANY OF THEM ARE WORTH ANYTHING. A ALSO HAVE A 1821 FARTHING, A 1907 1/2PENNY AND A 1917 PENNY THE LAST THREE ARE GREAT BRITAIN. DO YOU THINK ANY OF THEES ARE WORTH ANYTHING?
Its hard to say what they are worth without knowing the condition. A 1903 large cent starts around 2.00 and goes up to over 100 in MS63 condition, the 1919 starts around 1.00 and goes up to around 65.00. The 1968 dime is another matter since there were 3 different mints that year, still depends on condition also.Assuming it is in very good condition the nickel version starts around .50cents while the silver one starts around 2.00 they are both around 25.00 in MS65
I have a Canadian Quarter from 1964. It looks way different from other quarters i’ve seen. My friend said i should ask about it. I wont be disappointed if its worth nothing.
I came across a 1975 Elizabeth II canadian dollar. How would I find out if it is worth anything?
Hi, Everyone,
I just found a neat website with many different coin photographs. It might help during some of the discussions. The URL is:

I hope you find it helpful.

I have a Canadian looks to be gold klondikes mike salutes commonwealth games coin from 1978 is it worth anything?
Hello all,
I found a 1974 Canadian penny that is bigger than a normal one BUT it says that it is a “new penny” on the front with a picture of a some kind of a crown sitting on a gate.
Anyone have any information about it?
Best,
T.
Recently acquired an assorted collection of coins from my aun’ts estate. Searching for some info on: 1734 – Georgius II.Rex -other side/Britannia, 1806 Georgius III D.G.Rex-other side -Britannia, 1854 -Bank of Upper Canada – other side- Half Penny Bank Token
any guesses to value of these.
Is there any value for 1962 silver dollars – other than silver content?
Hey i was wondering how much a canadian one cent coin is worth if it is from 1969? Pleas let me know i was very interested.
My mother has a penny/dime. It has dime with heads on one side and a penny with tails with the year 1975. Size and thickness of a dime. I was wondering the value of it? Also the value of a 1890 US silver dollar with the eagle on the back.
i have a 5 dollar canadian coin that is in good shape but along the sides it says 9999 how much do you think i could get for it
I have a Canadian coin that is 1 cent and its year is 1915. Can you help to see how much it is worth?
im not 100% sure but with old items they is no recorded real money value. i.e. an apraiser could tell you its worth 5 dollars but some people may give you $20 for it and some may not give you $1 for it. recently i bought some canadian pennies that dated 1916 and originaly they were $6 each but he gave me a deal for $5 each. i would say you could ask as much as you see fit for it, just remember some people may think its too much or they may think its a real deal. hope this helps!
Hiya..
i ahve a penny with the date on the other side..it has 2 dates on it..but so small i caanot make it out..is this a common coin?
Just a tip for people not wanting to pay for an aprasal. check out Canadian or American antiques road show. There is generally no cost for admission and they usually have a handfull of coin experts on site.
Hello I have a 1907 Canadian 5 cent in about MS-55 state. It also however, has a die crack from the R in Edwardvs all the way to the portrait. It is not a scratch because it is outward like a mountain range rather than inward like a canyon. Could anyone tell me how much it’s worth? Does the die crack make it more valuable? Thank you in advance!
i have a 1929 canadian nickel…do you think its worth anything?
I have a 1945, and a 1956 canadian penny. I have a canadian dime from 1940 as well. I also have a 1966 .50 cent canadian coin. I ahve one American penny from 1951. I don’t think it is worth anything but it looks different than the rest. I am not looking to sell them if they are worth anything. I am just curious.
How much would a 1918 Canadian nickel be worth?
Hi….I have a canadian misprinted $2 coin from 1996 and the centre comes out. I found it at my place of work back in ’96. Just wondering if it may be worth something other than $2.

Hello, I have a 1971 Canadian silver dollar from British Columbia, it has a large F stamped on the front almost like a mint mark. Can anyone tell me if this is rare because I can’t find any on the internet with this big F next to the bust?
Thanks
